Mahone Bay
Prepares for the World! by
Shelly Hipson April 10th, 2002 Mahone Bay, N.S. - The 2002 Volvo Youth Sailing World Championships should attract over 200 youth from 40 countries to the waters of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. From July 19th to the 26th, 2002, the Lunenburg Yacht Club will come alive with young people who represent their country and are dedicated to the thrill of sailing. "It is the first world championship of any kind ever held on the South Shore of Nova Scotia and we are all very proud and excited about hosting it," says Ron Whynacht, Chairperson of Organizing Committee. Along with such boats as the Mistral, Laser and the Byte, the Organizing Committee received first-time approval from the International Sailing Federation to use a boat designed to bring some excitement to the races, "the 29er"; a boat that has "instant thrills and occasional spills." "The 29er is a first for the World Youths. It is a smaller version of the 49er, which has just become an Olympic class boat. This is further indication that this event is a pre-Olympic style event," says Whynacht. Two hundred volunteers throughout the province have joined the organizing committee to bring this event into the international spotlight. The opening ceremony will be held in the Town of Lunenburg on July 19, 2002.
