Andrew Gears Up
for Olympic Showdown! December 22nd, 1997 Windsor, N.S. - Snowboarder, Trevor Andrew of Falmouth, Nova Scotia wants to be one of the youngest competitors at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Japan in February, but first the 18-year-old must be named to Canada's first ever Olympic Snowboarding Team. His performance in three upcoming Olympic trial events could mean success or failure for the Hants County native. The three events are
scheduled for Canadian Olympic Park in Calgary beginning on January 7th. Originally, six
events were scheduled for the trials but because of poor weather and reoccurring labour
problems the three Trevor Andrew is not stranger to pressure and performs well under adverse conditions. According to his mom, Carol Andrew, "Trevor was sick with a bad case of the flu for an event in France in November, and was sick when he went on to Austria...but he still managed to finish fifth." A first place win in Stockholm, Sweden in late November netted Trevor $50,000 and thrust the Nova Scotian rider to the top of the world Half Pipe standings. But while his young age makes the Nagano Olympics particularly unique, it's not the end of the world if Trevor is not named to the Canadian Olympic Team. "Trevor will still have the opportunity in four years," Mrs. Andrew told Outdoor Nova Scotia. "He's racing against 23 and 24-year-olds right now and they may not have a shot at the next Olympics."
