Putting
Lighthouses in the Spotlight by Dave Caulfield
May 12th, 1999 Bridgewater, N.S.
- Call the South Shore Tourism Association's upcoming endeavour an attempt
to enlighten the public and draw attention to some of Nova Scotia's greatest treasures.
The folks at the SSTA are knee-deep in organizing a first-ever
international conference on lighthouses, designed to make every historic
beacon between Cape Forchu (outside Yarmouth) and Sambro a 'lighthousehold' name.
Lynne Perry, a lighthouse
researcher, conference planner and Executive Director with the SSTA, says the conference's
goal is to raise awareness of the historical significance of each lighthouse.
"We want to make them more well-known to the public," she explains. "We
want people to notice the lighthouses."
Perry adds that if all goes well, the conference should coincide with several festivals,
concerts and lobster suppers in communities all along the South Shore, which should help
with the conference's funding. Grants will likely account for the other funding chunk,
though Perry admits that this is still very much up in the air.
"We're hoping to have some international speakers," Perry says, adding that it's
too early to confirm any names.
The conference, which is tentatively scheduled for late-May/early-June of
2000, will also likely feature some of the area lighthouse keepers, who
will tell their stories.
