A New Way to Wet Fishing Flies!

by Kevin MacDonell

April 16th, 1998 Halifax, N. S. - To some, a well-tied fishing fly is a thing of beauty, too beautiful to use. Canada Post (www.mailposte.ca) celebrates the centuries-old art in its April 16 release of a new series of stamps, Fly Fishing in Canada. Sold in booklets of 12, the stamps picture six brilliantly-coloured flies as tied by masters in the craft, along with the type of fish each is designed to attract.

Canada Post chose Nova Scotian Eric Baylis to tie a favoured fly for Atlantic Salmon, the Cosseboom Special. Baylis has tied flies and fished in eastern Nova Scotian rivers for almost 50 years, and has created several popular flies. He owns and runs a fishing reel repair business in Dartmouth.

Baylis doesn't think the Cosseboom Special is necessarily a work of art, but it does do the job - it and its many variations are familiar to anglers all over the Maritimes and around the world. "You wouldn't think a little thing like that would go that far, would you?" he says.

Two other Nova Scotians are responsible for the creation of the series. Paul-Michael Brunelle, who designed and illustrated the stamps, and James Steeves, who took the photos of the flies and the background water patterns, both live in Halifax.

The other flies are the Coquihalla Orange (steelhead trout), the
Steelhead Bee (steelhead trout), the Dark Montreal (brook trout), the Lady
Amherst (Atlantic salmon), and the Coho Blue (coho salmon).
